RENTON, Wash. - Russell Wilson has generally shied away from commenting on social issues during his professional career. That changed Thursday when the Seattle Seahawks quarterback spoke out about domestic violence and candidly about being a bully as a child in a column for Derek Jeters new website.Ive tended to avoid controversial topics throughout my career, but in my first piece for The Players Tribune, I wanted to be open and address something thats important, timely and relevant, Wilson wrote. Ive been silent on the issue for too long, falling back on the I cant speak to someone elses personal life excuse. But victims need physical, emotional and financial support and care, and the resources to get away from their abusers. Abusers, you need to get help a€” you can change. The column by Wilson, who was announced as a senior editor for The Players Tribune, talks about his goal to raise funds and awareness through his new foundation a€” the Why Not You Foundation a€” with an initial focus on supporting victims of domestic violence.Wilson also wrote about being a bully in elementary and middle school, saying, I had a lot of anger that I didnt know what to do with. That admission surprised teammates who read the column.Well, he said that he used to beat people up. Thats a surprise, Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman said. Obviously, he said hes turned a different page in that book, but its still pretty interesting to see that.Wilson wrote that the perception hes given is that hes been Mr. Goody Two-Shoes his entire life. But he admitted to throwing kids against a wall, rubbing their heads in the dirt, biting them and knocking out teeth.Wilson wrote he changed at age 14 and was able to start living for others instead of just myself. And now that his professional career is established, with a Super Bowl title in hand, Wilson said he is focusing on helping domestic violence victims in the wake of the attention turned on the NFL following the Ray Rice case.Wilson wrote that the issue needs to be addressed and not avoided and that aggression needs to be kept on the field. How many of you reading right now knew that October is Domestic Violence Awareness month? I certainly didnt. I had to Google it, Wilson wrote. And thats part of why I felt so inspired to do my part. This initiative, this story, is about acknowledging something difficult, something wed rather not see. When I look back at beating kids up on the playground, I dont like that image. But I moved past that place in my life, and Im proud of the man I am now.Seattle coach Pete Carroll said he talked with Wilson earlier this week about his decision to start a foundation and come out with such a strong first statement. Carroll said the team would support Wilson every way it could.Im really proud of him. I think hes involved himself in a critical issue that maybe he can elevate awareness like were all trying to do for the right reasons, Carroll said. I thought his statements were well thought out and very clear. ... Im hoping it has a great impact and people will pick up on it and add to it and well see what happens.NOTES: Carroll said LB Bruce Irvin is the only injury question headed into Monday nights game. Irvin suffered a rib injury during practice heading into Seattles game against Denver two weeks ago. Carroll said he believes Irvin will be able to play. ... Seattle P Jon Ryan was named the NFC special teams player of the month. ... Sherman grew up with Washington WR DeSean Jackson and said there would be some friendly banter if they were lined up across from each other.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFLWholesale Baseball Jerseys . MIAMI -- The Miami Dolphins fired offensive line coach Jim Turner and longtime head athletic trainer Kevin ONeill on Wednesday for their roles in the teams bullying scandal. The moves were the first punitive steps taken by the Dolphins since a report on the NFLs investigation of the case was released last week. Investigators found that guard Richie Incognito and two teammates engaged in persistent harassment directed at tackle Jonathan Martin, another offensive lineman and an assistant trainer. Martin left the team at midseason, and Incognito was suspended for the final eight games. Turner didnt attempt to stop the harassment and even took part in some of the taunting of offensive lineman Andrew McDonald, the NFL report said. ONeill expressed hostility toward the investigation and cut short an interview with those conducting it, according to the report. ONeill was fired shortly after he and other team officials arrived in Indianapolis for the leagues annual scouting combine. Turner didnt make the trip. In a news release announcing the firings, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said the behaviour described in the report was "against the core values of our organization." "After receiving the report, I conducted my own internal review of the facts to determine the appropriate steps for our organization," Ross said. "Jim Turner and Kevin ONeill are good people who care a great deal about their profession and the players whom they serve, but both exhibited poor judgment at times, which led me to this conclusion." Ross said he haas been in contact with Martin and will meet soon with the two-year veteran.dddddddddddd Martin has two seasons remaining on his contract with the Dolphins, but last month Ross said he didnt believe the tackle would play again for Miami. Incognito becomes a free agent this winter and will try to sign with another team. Coach Joe Philbin made his first public comments since the reports release, saying the vulgar language and behaviour outlined were disappointing and unacceptable, and adding that fundamental values of respect were violated. "That ultimately rests on my shoulders, and I will be accountable moving forward for making sure that we emphasize a team-first culture of respect toward one another," Philbin said in a statement. The report found no evidence that Philbin was aware of abusive conduct within the team. Several people interviewed told investigators Turner gave McDonald a male sex doll as a gag gift around Christmas 2012. Turner told investigators he didnt remember the incident, but investigators said they didnt believe him. Martin told investigators ONeill and other team employees saw an assistant trainer being humiliated and didnt intervene. ONeill allegedly laughed at racial insults directed toward the assistant trainer. ONeill was the Dolphins trainer for 18 years and has been in the NFL for 25 years. He and his Miami staff won national awards, including one last year from the National Athletic Trainers Association. Turner joined the Dolphins shortly after Philbin was hired as head coach two years ago. ' ' '
